Supermafia is a swiss collective, what really drew me to them is their creative use of combining real life space with lighting and visuals. An installation test, aptly named ‘hologram’8, puts the DJ in between a hologram and a screen behind him. They use a hologram to project various objects in front of the DJ, making it seem like the objects are floating in the air in front of the performer. Another instance is their show for Flexfab9, where they have two big flags on either side of the performer attached to two rotating light bars beaming lights up against the flags. This physical movement is super organic and combined with flashing lights creates so much energy. This is quite similar to another installation they did, ‘The Equilibrist’.10 It consists of more than 100 lights hanging from a custom rig that they can move around. The lights move to the music, creating an almost wave like movement of the lights above the audience. This leads to the shadows of the audience constantly moving around, which creates movement both above and below the audience. All three of these installations are great ways of making a show more immersive, by not limiting themselves to a 2D space like a screen.
